Thermal Break vs Non-Thermal Break Aluminium Windows

What separates the inside and outside aluminium—and how that changes the questions to ask before specifying a window.

Follow the thermal path through the frame

Aluminium conducts heat readily. A thermal break places a lower-conductivity separator between interior and exterior aluminium parts to interrupt a continuous metal path. This concept does not establish the performance of any specific window.

Selection checklist

Trace the frame, glazing and evidence

  1. What changes in the frame

A non-thermally-broken metal frame can provide a continuous conductive path through the frame. In a thermally-broken frame, an insulating strip connects two aluminium sections. The strip, connection and profile arrangement must be confirmed from the selected system.

  2. Why the frame is only one part

The glazing build-up, low-emissivity coating, gas fill, spacer, seals, frame geometry, size and installation all affect the whole-window result. Ask for ratings or test evidence for the exact window configuration, not a claim about the profile alone.

  3. When to compare options

Start with the project climate, heating or cooling goals, condensation concerns, daylight and solar-control needs. Then compare complete assemblies against the target and available evidence. A thermal-break label by itself is not an energy rating.

Common questions

Questions about the frame and glazing

Does a thermal break prove a particular U-factor?

No. It describes a frame construction concept. A whole-window value must be supported by a documented rating or test for the relevant configuration.

Can the glass be chosen separately from the frame?

The parts must be compatible. Glass weight, thickness, edge support, spacer, seals and frame capacity should be reviewed together.

What should I request from a supplier?

Ask for the system drawing, glass build-up, applicable whole-product performance evidence and the exact size/configuration covered by it.
